I installed this Dickinson stove in our 29 foot wooden ketch to replace a 40 year old Cole stove that was finally too corroded to repair. The Dickinson is at least as robust as the Cole stove and with its additional replaceable double firebox lining, I expect it will last decades. We burn coal, and it quickly warms our small cabin in the blustery and foggy Northern California waters. Dickinson recommends a minimum 4 foot stove pipe, but we have only a little more than a 2 foot chimney and the draft is almost always adequate even when we use the stove under way at sea. When we stuff the firebox with coal and bank down the dampers, the stove keeps us warm all night in our small cabin. (Leave open some outside ventilation and install a CO monitor.) The flicker of the fire compliments the warm glow of the kerosine lamps as we swing at anchor in some coastal cove. I gave the stove only 4 stars as the firebox is even smaller than the Cole stove, and it may not adequately heat a boat that is any larger or in a cold clime. |
